Happy National Margarita Day! In honor of the day and our love for the classic tequila cocktail, we want to share a deeper look into the beloved drink

Although margaritas are not the only tequila cocktail, it is agreed upon and can be personalized by all bartenders.

Translated from Spanish to English, Margarita means “daisy flower” which dates back to the 1920’s cocktail “The Daisy”- which uses citrus, orange liqueur, soda water combo, and a spirit of choice. Now, bartenders refer to two parts booze, one part Cointreau, and three-quarters lemon or lime juice as the daisy format. Other cocktails that follow this format are the Kamikaze and the Sidecar.

Before the prohibition, tequila could not be found in America, but since there was a lot happening in our country during that time, Americans would travel down to Mexico and have tried tequila for the first time. However, no one can pin point the inventor of the cocktail we all know and love.

However, the first print version of the cocktail (not the name) found comes from the “Cafe Royal Cocktail Book” by William Tarling from 1937. It has a very similar recipe but at the time was named “Picador”

Facts about the margarita cocktail:

  • It was the most ordered mixed drink of 2008

  • The worlds largest margarita was made in Las Vegas in 2011- it was 32,176 liters and took 60 people over 300 hours to create!

  • Every year there is a World Margarita Championship in Arizona where bartenders come out for one to receive the honor of best margarita in Arizona.

  • The first frozen margarita machine was invented in 1971 by a 26 year old restauranter in Dallas!

Now there are many iterations of the original margarita- from frozen to adding spice, there is a margarita out there for everyone!
